What this page is for
Printify will take a low-resolution file and print it, and the first time you notice is when a customer gets a soft, jagged shirt. The other common failure is a background that looks transparent on screen but is actually a grey and white checkerboard painted into the image, which then prints.
This page catches both before you upload. It works out the real DPI at the print area you enter, tells you the largest size the file prints sharp, and checks the transparency pixel by pixel.
The rule: Printify's file requirements
Printify accepts JPEG, PNG and SVG. JPEG and PNG can be up to 100 MB, SVG up to 20 MB. Printify recommends 300 DPI for standard products and 120 to 150 DPI for large items such as leggings, blankets and tapestries.
Print areas differ by product and print provider. Printify shows the exact area in the Product Creator; enter those inches here. DPI is worked out with the design fitted inside the area at its own shape, the way it would be placed.
This page can remove a clean painted checkerboard. It cannot add resolution: a file that is too small needs an AI upscaler or a smaller print.
Worked example
AI-generated design, 1024 x 1024 px, on a 12 x 16 in shirt front. Fitted to the area it prints about 12 x 12 in at 85 DPI, well under 300.
At 300 DPI the same file prints sharp only up to about 3.4 x 3.4 in. To fill the area it needs about 3600 x 4800 px, roughly a 4.7x upscale.
How to use it
- In Printify, open the product and note the print area size in inches.
- Enter the width and height here, and pick 150 DPI for large items.
- Tap Choose design and select the PNG, JPEG or SVG.
- Tap Check design.
- If a painted checkerboard is found, download the cleaned PNG and check its edges before uploading.
Questions
Does Printify reject low-DPI files?
No. Printify says it automatically enhances lower-resolution files before production, but it recommends high-resolution files. A low-DPI file prints; it just prints soft.
How do I know the background is really transparent?
Checkerboards you see in an editor are just how transparency is displayed. This page reads the pixels: real transparency has no colour at all, while a painted checkerboard is ordinary grey and white pixels that will print.
Can this page upscale my design?
No. Upscaling well needs an AI model. The page tells you how much upscaling the file needs, or the largest size it prints sharp as it is.
What about SVG files?
SVG is vector artwork and prints sharp at any size, so the DPI check does not apply. Printify caps SVG at 20 MB.
Is my design uploaded?
No. The check runs in your browser.
