Why Does Printify Say My Image Is Low Resolution?
What the low resolution warning means, how big the file needs to be, and the checkerboard problem.
1. What the warning means
Printify measures resolution in DPI, dots per inch at the printed size. Its help centre recommends 300 DPI for most products and says 120 to 150 DPI is enough for large items such as blankets, tapestries and leggings, which are seen from further away.
DPI is not stored in the file in any way that matters. It is simply the pixel width divided by the print width. A design 3000 pixels wide printed 10 inches wide is 300 DPI. The same design printed 15 inches wide is 200 DPI.
2. Why AI images are almost always too small
Most AI image tools produce images about 1024 pixels on a side. At 300 DPI that prints sharp at only about 3.4 inches. A typical t-shirt front print area of 12 x 16 inches needs about 3600 x 4800 pixels. So an AI image placed at full size on a shirt comes out around 85 DPI, and Printify warns you.
Printify says it automatically enhances lower-resolution designs before printing, but that cannot add real detail, and soft edges and blocky text still show on the product.
3. How to fix it
Check the real numbers first. The Printify image checker takes your file and print size and tells you the actual DPI and the largest size it prints sharp at, in your browser.
Print it smaller. If the design works as a chest logo instead of a full front, the same pixels can reach 300 DPI.
Upscale it properly. An AI upscaler can enlarge an image two to four times and rebuild edges far better than simply resizing. Check the result again afterwards, because upscalers can also invent odd details.
Start bigger. Many image tools have a high resolution or upscale option. Generating at the largest size available saves a step.
4. The checkerboard printed on the shirt
This is the other common Printify surprise. Many AI tools show a grey and white checkerboard to mean "transparent", and some of them actually paint that pattern into the pixels. The file looks transparent on screen but is not, and the checkerboard prints. The checker detects a painted checkerboard and can remove a clean one, leaving a real transparent PNG.
5. File type and size
Printify accepts JPEG and PNG files up to 100 MB and SVG up to 20 MB. Use PNG when the design needs a transparent background.
